The International Volunteer Challenge Trophy to be shot for at the Wimbledon Meeting, 1865. Creator: Unknown
The International Volunteer Challenge Trophy to be shot for at the Wimbledon Meeting, 1865. Designed by Auguste Willms and made by Elkington and Co. 'At each end of the plateau is an allegorical group - one illustrative of Peace, the other of War. Peace is typified by...Minerva bearing the traditional olive branch, and standing in a car adorned with fruit and flowers. The car is drawn by oxen, harnessed with garlands, indicating the easy yoke of government in times of peace, and led by a youth who bears a sheaf as a sign of plenty...Mars, the god of war, rides in a car embellished with arms and laurels, drawn by horses, led by Valour in the form of a youth...Four allegorical groups occupy other portions of the pedestal. Of these one side shows the blessings of peace, represented by two happy matrons with their children, surrounded by the attributes of Commerce, Navigation, Science, and Art. The evils of war are suggested by the figures of a woman who is endeavouring to restrain her boy from following the god of war to the field, and a mother consoling her son...The central column takes the form of a bundle of fasces, bound with wreaths of laurel...On the top of the column stands the Genius of Patriotism'. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph print, a majestic trophy stands ready to take center stage at the prestigious Wimbledon meeting in London. Designed by Auguste Willms and crafted by Elkington & Co., this masterpiece of allegorical art is an ode to the power of peace and war.
At either end of the pedestal, two groups come together to represent these opposing forces: Peace, typified by Minerva bearing a traditional olive branch, stands serene in her chariot adorned with fruit and flowers; while War, embodied by Mars riding his car embellished with arms and laurels, is led forth by Valour. The contrast between the easy yoke of government under peaceful times and the turmoil of war could not be more stark.
The pedestal itself features four additional allegorical groups that highlight the blessings of peace: two happy matrons surrounded by symbols of Commerce, Navigation, Science, and Art; as well as a mother trying to restrain her son from following Mars into battle. Meanwhile, on top of the central column stands the Genius of Patriotism - an enduring symbol of national pride.
This extraordinary trophy print is not only a testament to human ingenuity but also serves as a poignant reminder of the eternal struggle between peace and war. A true masterpiece for any art lover or historian, this photograph captures a moment in time that will forever be etched in our collective memory.
