The International Exhibition: bronze statue, "The Castaway", by Charles Fuller, 1862....an example of the excellent casting of the Italian founder Clemente Papi...entitled in the catalogue "A Shipwrecked Man"...The only accessory is the piece of the wreck, a portion of the "crosstrees" as they are technically called, with ropes and pulley, by which the man has reached shore...He is faint, bruised, and exhausted, but he makes a desperate effort to hail for assistance. There is no certain gleam of hope in his eye, however; no expression of actual recognition in his face. He has reached a lonely, deserted, perhaps inhospitable, coast. Thus are our sympathies awakened and thus are we left to speculate, a true artist often telling most by what he leaves untold. The idea of this subject is also very happily conceived, in that it permits the introduction of the nude without any obvious improbability...The sculptor has taken advantage of this scope afforded by the subject to display, though not parade, a thorough knowledge of anatomy in every part of the modelling. There is, indeed, nothing unnatural, forced, improbable, or slighted in this very effective work...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

The Castaway
EDITORS COMMENTS
by Charles Fuller, a bronze statue created in 1862, is a poignant and thought-provoking work of art showcased at The International Exhibition. Captured in this photograph by W. Thomas, the statue portrays a shipwrecked man in a state of exhaustion and despair. The only accessory in the scene is a piece of the wreck, a portion of the crosstrees with ropes and pulley, which the man has used to reach the shore. The man's expression is one of desperation, with no clear sign of hope in his eyes. He has reached a lonely, perhaps inhospitable, coast, leaving us to speculate about his fate. The artist masterfully employs the nude figure to evoke our sympathies, using the subject to display a deep understanding of anatomy without appearing forced or improbable. The casting of "The Castaway" is an excellent example of the skills of the Italian founder, Clemente Papi. The statue is entitled in the exhibition catalogue as "A Shipwrecked Man," and its title perfectly encapsulates the sense of isolation and vulnerability conveyed by the figure. The statue's concept is brilliant in its simplicity, allowing for the introduction of the nude without any obvious improbability. The sculptor, Charles Fuller, has expertly captured the essence of human struggle and survival in this powerful and evocative work of art. Through what he leaves untold, Fuller invites us to imagine the man's backstory and contemplate the human condition. This effective work of art continues to captivate and inspire viewers, leaving a lasting impression on all who behold it.
