Ice Crystals Formed on the Line of a Fish Trap, c1908, (1909)

Ice Crystals Formed on the Line of a Fish Trap, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of ice crystals formed on the line of a fish trap in Antarctica, circa 1908. The image is part of Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton's remarkable journey during his second expedition to the Antarctic from 1907 to 1909. Shackleton, along with three companions, achieved an unprecedented feat by reaching the Farthest South latitude at 88° S, coming within a mere 97 geographical miles of the elusive South Pole. In addition to this incredible accomplishment, members of Shackleton's team also conquered Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. This photograph serves as a testament to their indomitable spirit and unwavering determination in exploring uncharted territories. Ernest Shackleton was honored for his achievements when he was knighted by King Edward VII. However, tragedy struck during his third and final oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition when he passed away at just 47 years old. The illustration featured here is taken from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I authored by E. H. Shackleton himself. It offers us a glimpse into an era where scientific research and exploration were intertwined in pushing human boundaries amidst extreme conditions. As we admire this frozen scene captured over a century ago, let it serve as a reminder that nature's wonders can be both awe-inspiring and unforgiving simultaneously – showcasing mankind's relentless pursuit for knowledge against all odds.
