The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - Portion of the South Front, 1850. Creator: Unknown

The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - Portion of the South Front, 1850. The South Front of the "Industrial Palace" towards the Kensington-road...when completed, will present upon the whole rather a pleasing elevation, although unbroken throughout by any material projection, either in plan or section. The whole surface, however, being subdivided into panels, and surmounted by open fanlights, and crowned with an ornamental frieze, relieves the eye of all monotonous appearance...In the whole length of the South Front there are altogether seventy-eight cast-iron columns, placed...at intervals of twenty-four feet from centre to centre. Each of these columns stands on an extended base of the same material, three feet in length, and one foot six inches in width, but tapering in plan towards either extremity, and the whole being strengthened by two vertical flanges'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park, London, 1851: A Vision of Architectural Innovation and Industrial Progress This photograph captures a portion of the South Front of the renowned Great Exhibition Building, located in the heart of Hyde Park, London, during its inaugural year of 1851. The Industrial Palace, as it was affectionately known, was a groundbreaking architectural marvel of its time, designed to showcase the best of industrial achievements from around the world. The South Front of the building, depicted in this image, presents a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. Despite its unbroken surface, the monotonous appearance is alleviated by the subdivision of the surface into panels, open fanlights, and an ornamental frieze. The eye is further treated to the sight of seventy-eight cast-iron columns, evenly spaced at twenty-four-foot intervals. Each column stands on an extended base, adding to the building's grandeur and stability. The Illustrated London News, in its 1850 edition, described the South Front as 'rather a pleasing elevation' that 'relieves the eye of all monotonous appearance.' The newspaper further noted that the columns were 'placed at intervals of twenty-four feet from centre to centre' and that 'each of these columns stands on an extended base of the same material, three feet in length, and one foot six inches in width, but tapering in plan towards either extremity, and the whole being strengthened by two vertical flanges.' This photograph offers a glimpse into the architectural innovation and industrial progress that defined the Victorian era. The Great Exhibition Building was a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of its time, and this photograph serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of this architectural masterpiece.
