EDITORS COMMENTS
The Graphic" Stanley Number: Zanzibaris Scaring Elephants which were destroying a Banana Grove near Bodo, 1890. This photograph, taken from "The Graphic. An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper" Volume 41, January to June, 1890, provides a glimpse into the Victorian era's exploration of the African continent. The image depicts a group of African men, known as Zanzibaris, using torches to scare off a herd of elephants that were destroying a banana grove near Bodo. Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a renowned British explorer, stands at the center of the photograph, observing the scene with a thoughtful expression. Stanley, dressed in a suit and hat, had made a name for himself by leading the search for the missing explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, in Africa. Here, he is seen in a different role, acting as a mediator between the local people and the destructive elephants. The background is filled with the silhouettes of other men, all carrying torches, ready to protect their crops from the marauding elephants. The time of day is night, and the torchlight casts an eerie glow over the scene, adding to the tension and excitement. John Rowlands, another British explorer, is also present in the photograph, standing to the right of Stanley. The photograph is a testament to the challenges faced by explorers and local communities during the 19th century as they navigated the African continent, and the lengths they went to protect their resources and livelihoods. The photograph is a fascinating reminder of the rich history of exploration and the complex relationships between explorers, local communities, and the natural world during the Victorian era. Despite being a century old, the image remains as captivating and thought-provoking as ever.
