Georgians, 1862. Sheet 25 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating image from Sheet 25 of the ethnographic album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. Created by the renowned German ethnographer Karlis Huns, this photograph is part of a two-volume work dedicated to Tsar Alexander II in commemoration of the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire. Volume 1 of this comprehensive ethnographic study consists of 62 colored illustrations, each depicting various ethnic groups from across the vast Russian Empire in their traditional attire. This volume also includes a fold-out table detailing the size of the populations of these ethnicities in the empire's cities and a colored-coded ethnographic map indicating their geographical distribution. In this photograph, the Georgians are shown in their traditional clothing, with the men wearing long, flowing robes called chokha and the women donning long, embroidered dresses known as saraktsi. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of their garments reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Georgian people. The "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" is a testament to the state of anthropological and historical knowledge during the 1860s. The work was the brainchild of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia, and it offers valuable insights into the ethnic diversity and cultural richness of the Russian Empire at the time. This photograph not only serves as a visual representation of the Georgian people during the mid-19th century but also contributes to a broader understanding of the ethnographic and historical context of the Russian Empire during this period. It is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a window into the lives and traditions of the diverse peoples who inhabited the Russian Empire over a century and a half ago.
