Gathering seaweed, 1860s-1880s. Creator: Richard Beavis
Gathering seaweed, 1860s-1880s. Gathering Seaweed is a coastal landscape displaying the collaboration between people and animals. Farm animals, especially horses, were acknowledged as helpers in the development of civilisation and modernity. Though the horse in this work is not actively helping in gathering the seaweed, its participation is implied by the big cart to the left, which it will surely have to pull later on. It is also a very atmospheric landscape: two thirds of the composition consist entirely of sky and clouds, and the cold, windy condition is indicated through the horse's mane and blanket being blown to the side

Celestial Harmony - Gathering Seaweed (1860s-1880s)
EDITORS COMMENTS
- A captivating coastal landscape by renowned artist Richard Beavis. This serene scene captures the collaboration between humans and animals, as farm horses played a vital role in shaping modernity. Although this horse is not actively assisting with seaweed gathering, its presence implies future cooperation through the large cart waiting to be pulled.
The atmospheric composition dominates two-thirds of the frame with an expanse of sky and clouds, evoking a sense of coldness and windiness. The horse's mane and blanket are blown sideways, further emphasizing this weather condition. In contrast, the calm sea stretches out towards the horizon, where low tide reveals hidden rock pools.
This 19th-century masterpiece not only showcases Richard Beavis' skillful watercolour technique but also highlights local industry and heritage in Britain during that era. The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa proudly presents this stunning piece as a testament to our shared cultural history.
