Frozen Lake, Foot of Jamess Peak, 1874. Creator: Charles Maurand
Frozen Lake, Foot of Jamess Peak, 1874. Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains, USA. It was formerly known as James Peak, in honor of Edwin James who climbed to the summit in 1820. Jamess Peak comes next in our route, and at its foot we see one of the pretty frozen lakes that are scattered all over the range. It is a picturesque and weird yet tenderly sentimental scene...The surface is as smooth as a mirror, and reflects the funereal foliage and snowy robes of the slopes as clearly. It is as chaste as morning, and we can think of ice-goblins chasing underneath the folds of virgin snow that the pale moon-light faintly touches and bespangles. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

Frozen Lake, Foot of Jamess Peak, 1874
EDITORS COMMENTS
by Charles Maurand captures the breathtaking beauty of Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains, USA. This enchanting print showcases a picturesque frozen lake nestled at the base of Jamess Peak, surrounded by towering fir trees and snow-covered slopes. The smooth surface of the lake mirrors the somber foliage and snowy robes adorning the mountainside with an ethereal quality. Maurand's skillful engraving transports us to a scene that is both awe-inspiring and tenderly sentimental. The moonlight delicately touches and bespangles the virgin snow, evoking a sense of tranquility amidst this icy wonderland. One can almost imagine mischievous ice-goblins playfully darting beneath its pristine surface. Taken from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874, this artwork encapsulates the majesty and grandeur of nature during America's 19th century exploration period. Maurand's attention to detail brings forth not only stunning landscapes but also highlights our connection to these untouched wildernesses. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of Edwin James' historic climb to Jamess Peak summit in 1820 – a testament to human determination against formidable natural forces. Through Maurand's artistry, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand the untamed beauty that once captivated explorers like James. This remarkable piece serves as a timeless reminder that even within harsh environments such as frozen lakes and rugged mountain ranges lie moments of profound serenity and unparalleled natural splendor.
