The French Transatlantic Company's steam-packet Washington, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The French Transatlantic Company's steam-packet Washington, 1864. 'This large and beautiful paddle-wheel steamer, the first of a line of mail-packets, subsidised by the Imperial Government of France, to run between Havre and New York, has just been completed by Messrs. Scott and Co., Cartsdyke, Greenock...She is the property of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique...The engines are supplied with steam from four large boilers, two forward and two abaft the engines...There are also two small boilers for supplying two donkey-engines with steam when the other boilers are not working. The large boilers are all cased in malleable iron plates two inches apart from the boilers, the plates being so constructed that any part can be removed without taking down the whole casing. The Washington will have accommodation for 330 first-class passengers, hold capacity for 1000 tons of goods, and be able to stow 1500 tons of coal in her bunkers. Before her departure she went on a short cruise, in the course of which she ran sixteen statute miles in 61 minutes'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

**The Majestic Washington: A Pioneering Steam-Packet on the High Seas**
In this photograph, taken in 1864, we find ourselves aboard The French Transatlantic Company's steam-packet Washington, a behemoth of innovation and luxury. As one of the first mail-packets to run between Havre and New York, this magnificent vessel was subsidized by the Imperial Government of France and built by Scott & Co., Cartsdyke, Greenock.
The Washington boasts an impressive array of features that set it apart from its contemporaries. Its powerful engines are fueled by four large boilers, with two smaller ones providing steam for donkey-engines when needed. The vessel's hull is protected by a unique malleable iron casing, allowing individual sections to be removed without compromising the entire structure.
Accommodating 330 first-class passengers and boasting ample cargo space for 1000 tons of goods, this mighty ship was designed with comfort and efficiency in mind. Its impressive coal storage capacity allows it to stay at sea for extended periods.
Before its maiden voyage, The Washington took a short cruise, during which it demonstrated its remarkable speed by covering an astonishing sixteen statute miles in just 61 minutes. This photograph captures the essence of this pioneering steam-packet as it sets sail into history, leaving a lasting legacy on the high seas.
