EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking engraving is a portrait of Eleanor Gwynne, also known as Nell Gwynne, an actress and mistress of King Charles II of England during the Restoration period. The portrait was created by renowned English engraver Richard Earlom in 1810, and was originally published in Samuel Woodburn's collection of historical portraits, "Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second" in 1815. Eleanor Gwynne was born into poverty in England around 1650, and rose to fame as an actress in the theatres of London. Her charm and wit quickly caught the attention of King Charles II, who became infatuated with her and made her his mistress. Their relationship was scandalous at the time, as Gwynne was a commoner and the king was married to Catherine of Braganza. Despite the controversy, Gwynne remained a favorite of the king until her death in 1687. In this portrait, Gwynne is depicted wearing a fashionable 17th century dress, with an elaborate hairstyle and intricate hairdo. Her hair is styled in ringlets and curls, and she wears a high-necked, long-sleeved gown with a low-cut bodice and a full skirt. The print also includes a banner at the bottom with the inscription "Eleanor Gwynne (Nell), actress and mistress of Charles II; Obit 1687." This portrait is a testament to the enduring allure of Eleanor Gwynne, who continues to fascinate historians and the public alike with her story of love, scandal, and success in the face of adversity.
