EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a pivotal moment in history, depicting Edward III of England making a solemn vow for peace in the year 1360. The Hundred Years War had been raging on, and despite rejecting previous offers for peace, the king was struck by fear during a powerful thunderstorm. In this striking image, Edward III is shown stretching his hand towards the magnificent Cathedral of Chartres, symbolizing his commitment to no longer obstructing peace. Clad in regal attire and standing at the center of attention, King Edward III's expression reveals both determination and trepidation. His cloak billows around him as he kneels before the cathedral, seeking solace and guidance amidst nature's fury. The lithograph beautifully captures the medieval atmosphere with its intricate details and vibrant colors. This historic moment proved significant as just three weeks later on May 8th, 1360, the Treaty of Bretigny was signed – an agreement that marked a turning point in the conflict between England and France. It is fascinating to witness how superstition played a role in shaping political decisions during this era. James William Edmund Doyle's masterful artwork from 1864 transports us back to this crucial period where war loomed large over Europe. This piece invites us to reflect upon not only historical events but also human emotions such as fear and hope that transcend time itself.
