Doorway (Portal), late 1400s. Creator: Unknown
Doorway (Portal), late 1400s. This doorway may have been a part of Federico da Montelfeltros Ducal Palace in Gubbio, Italy, built in 1470 by Luciano Laurana and possibly finished by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. A Ducal studiolo decorated with wooden panels is in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Because of the differences in ornamentation between the doorways in the Mets Ducal studiolo and this doorway, it is not certain that this doorway is from Gubbios Ducal Palace. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning doorway known as the "Portal" believed to date back to the late 1400s. The creator of this architectural masterpiece remains unknown, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to its history. It is speculated that this doorway might have been part of Federico da Montelfeltro's Ducal Palace in Gubbio, Italy, which was constructed in 1470 by Luciano Laurana and potentially completed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The Metropolitan Museum in New York houses a Ducal studiolo adorned with wooden panels that share similarities with this doorway. However, due to distinct differences in ornamentation between the two doorways, it cannot be definitively confirmed if this particular one originated from Gubbio's Ducal Palace. The arch of the Portal is exquisitely embellished with masks, urns, and intricate garlands that add a touch of grandeur and elegance. Notably, two profile heads gaze out from the upper corners of the doorway, further enhancing its artistic allure. Crafted from gray sandstone during the 15th century in Gubbio, Italy – renowned for its rich heritage art – this sculpture now finds itself housed within The Cleveland Museum of Art. Its origins may remain shrouded in uncertainty; however, there is no denying the timeless beauty and craftsmanship captured within this remarkable piece.
