EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'Clemenceau; M.Clemenceau, in the forest of Apremont, between a general and a soldier,' was published in 'L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2' by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924. The image captures the renowned French statesman, Georges Clemenceau, in the forest of Apremont during the First World War in January 1916. Clemenceau, dressed in a heavy overcoat and a hat, stands between a general and a soldier, both clad in military uniforms. The general, wearing a casque and carrying a map, and the soldier, with a rifle slung over his shoulder, pay their respects to the elderly politician. The forest setting, with its bare trees and winter landscape, adds a sense of somberness to the scene. Georges Clemenceau, born on September 28, 1841, served as the Prime Minister of France during the latter part of the war. He was a key figure in the French resistance and played a significant role in leading France to victory. The eleventh month of the year, which is now known as November, saw the end of the war in 1918. This photograph offers a glimpse into the historical context of the First World War and the important figures involved. The image is a testament to the determination and resilience of the French people during this critical period in European history.
