Chicago, 1874. Creator: Unknown
Chicago, 1874. Views of Lake Michigan and the city of Chicago, Illinois, USA: The City from the Water Works; Mouth of Chicago River. Chicago is situated on the west shore of Lake Michigan...at the mouth of a bayou, or river. The site of the business portion is fourteen feet above the level of the lake...It is divided into three parts by a bayou, called the Chicago River, which extends from the lake-shore about five-eighths of a mile, then divides into two branches, running north and south, nearly parallel with the lake, about two miles in each direction. The river and its branches, with numerous slips, give a water-frontage, not including the lake-front, of thirty-eight miles. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling city of Chicago in 1874, a moment frozen in time by an unknown creator. The image showcases the breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and the vibrant cityscape that defined this era. Situated on the west shore of Lake Michigan, Chicago is depicted as a thriving industrial hub at the mouth of a bayou or river. Divided into three parts by the Chicago River, which extends from the lake-shore about five-eighths of a mile before branching off north and south, this waterway played a crucial role in shaping Chicago's identity. With numerous slips and branches, it provided an extensive water-frontage of thirty-eight miles for trade and transport. The print reveals various elements that characterized 19th-century Chicago: towering buildings dotting the skyline, grain elevators symbolizing its booming industrial revolution, sailing ships gracefully navigating through its busy harbor waters. A steamship and tugboat add to the maritime activity captured in this snapshot. Taken from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and featuring illustrations by eminent American artists, this historic image offers us insight into how Chicago looked during this transformative period. It serves as both a testament to its rich history as well as an invitation to explore further into its past.
