The Camp After Passing the Previous Farthest South Latitude, November 1908, (1909)

The Camp After Passing the Previous Farthest South Latitude - New Land is Seen in the Background, November 1908, (1909). On 26 November, Shackleton, Adams, Marshall and Wild passed the previous furthest south point reached by Robert Scott (a trip that Shackleton was also on) in 1902. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the momentous achievement of Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton and his team during their second Antarctic expedition in November 1908. Titled "The Camp After Passing the Previous Farthest South Latitude" this image showcases the camp set up by Shackleton, Adams, Marshall, and Wild after surpassing Robert Scott's previous record from 1902. Shackleton's relentless pursuit led them to reach an unprecedented latitude of 88° S, a mere 97 geographical miles away from the elusive South Pole. The vast expanse of uncharted territory stretches out behind their camp as new land comes into view. This remarkable feat marked the largest advancement towards the pole in exploration history at that time. Not only did Shackleton etch his name in history with this accomplishment, but he also conquered Mount Erebus, Antarctica's most active volcano alongside his team members. Their daring ascent added another extraordinary chapter to their already impressive journey. Ernest Shackleton was honored for these groundbreaking achievements when he was knighted by King Edward VII. Tragically, his life was cut short during his third and final expedition while exploring oceanography and sub-Antarctic regions at just 47 years old. This illustration is taken from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I by E. H. Shackleton himself, published in London in 1909 by William Heinemann. It serves as a testament to Shackleton's indomitable spirit and unwavering determination that pushed him beyond known boundaries into uncharted territories.
