The Barrier Edge Breaking Away Four Miles South of Hut Point, c1908, (1909)

The Barrier Edge Breaking Away Four Miles South of Hut Point, c1908, (1909). Edge of the Great Ice Barrrier seen from the deck of the Nimrod. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history that showcases the immense power and beauty of the Antarctic landscape. Taken during Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton's second expedition to the region in 1907-1909, it depicts "The Barrier Edge Breaking Away Four Miles South of Hut Point". Standing on the deck of the Nimrod, Shackleton and his team witnessed this extraordinary event unfold before their eyes. The Great Ice Barrier, an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon stretching across vast distances, was breaking away just south of Hut Point. This image serves as a testament to both the relentless forces shaping our planet and human curiosity pushing boundaries. Shackleton's expeditions were marked by remarkable achievements. During this particular journey, he set a new record for Farthest South latitude at 88° S, coming within striking distance of reaching the elusive South Pole itself. In addition to these feats, members of his team also conquered Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. Sadly, Shackleton's life was cut short during his third expedition while exploring oceanography and sub-Antarctic regions. However, his legacy lives on through photographs like this one which provide us with glimpses into his daring adventures. This illustration is taken from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I by E. H. Shackleton himself - a testament to his determination to share these incredible experiences with others. Today we can marvel at this photograph as a reminder not only of Shackleton's bravery but also as an appreciation for Earth's majestic landscapes that continue to captivate explorers and adventurers alike.
