Balaclava Harbour, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Balaclava Harbour, 1854. Crimean War....Balaclava has been completely changed into a Greek town...[It] is situated close to the harbour, along the foot of the mountain, but it is not provided with good water. As the port is deep, sheltered by lofty mountains, and contracted towards the sea, its waters are in general as calm as those of a pond. The length of the harbour does not exceed one verst and a half, and its breadth is about 200 fathoms. The entrance is very deep; yet being confined within high rocks its channel scarcely admits two vessels to sail abreast...The old fortress, like all the strong places of the Genoese and Greeks in this peninsula, is erected on inaccessible rocks, close to the mouth of the harbour, on the adjoining eastern hill. It is fortified with high walls and towers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
Balaclava Harbour, 1854: A Glimpse into the Past This image, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1854, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past of Balaclava Harbour, located on the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine. The scene depicts a tranquil harbour, nestled between towering mountains and surrounded by lush greenery. The harbour, then a significant naval base during the Crimean War, has been completely transformed from its original state. The print reveals the harbour's unique characteristics, including its narrow length and limited breadth, which made it a strategic location for naval forces. The entrance to the harbour is deep and sheltered by high rocks, allowing only two vessels to sail abreast. In the foreground, a paddle steamer and several sailing ships can be seen anchored, adding to the bustling activity of the harbour. The old fortress, perched atop a nearby hill, is a testament to the area's rich history. Fortified with high walls and towers, it stands guard over the harbour entrance, a reminder of the disputed territory and the conflicts that once raged in this region. The fortress, like many others in the area, was built on inaccessible rocks, making it a formidable stronghold. The print also reveals the diverse range of vessels that frequented the harbour, from battleships and steamships to paddle steamers and sailing ships. The image provides a snapshot of the transportation and trade that once thrived in this area, connecting Europe and Russia to the Black Sea and beyond. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of naval battles, strategic importance, and rich history. The harbour may have changed significantly since this image was taken, but its enduring charm and historical significance remain.
