"Autolycus", by C.R. Leslie, from the National Collection in the South Kensington Museum, 1865. Engraving of a painting, scene '...from "The Winter's Tale," act iv. scene 3..."Here's another ballad, Of a fish, that appeared upon the coast, on 'Wednesday, the fourscore of April, forty thousand fathom above water, and sung this ballad about the hard hearts of maids". The passage at once gives the clue to the audacious humour of the ballad-singer and the credulous folly of the rustics...There is perhaps none of Shakspeare's minor characters more admirably and laughably individualised than the professional pedler and incurable "rogue" Autolycus, and surely nothing could more aptly realise the poet's conception than the painter's representation of the character before us - with his pack of cheap and tawdry, but to the simple and vain irresistibly tempting wares slung before him; with his rakishly slouched hat and draggled feather, his loose mantle, so convenient for a "snapper-up of unconsidered trifles," and now vociferating his lying ballads with such an air of entire good faith and unctuous enthusiasm'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
**A Masterful Depiction: "Autolycus"**
In this print, artist C.R. Leslie brings to life one of Shakespeare's most endearing and cunning characters - Autolycus, the professional pedler and rogue extraordinaire. From Act IV, Scene III of "The Winter's Tale", we find ourselves in the midst of a lively ballad performance by Autolycus himself.
With his trusty pack of cheap trinkets slung before him like a badge of honor, Autolycus regales us with tales of fantastical fish and their profound wisdom on the hard hearts of maids. His rakish hat, draggled feather, loose mantle, and infectious enthusiasm all conspire to bring his outlandish ballads to life.
This exquisite print from 1865 not only showcases Leslie's mastery of capturing character but also provides a window into the world of Shakespearean drama during this era. The illustration was originally published in "Illustrated London News" that same year, offering readers a glimpse into the whimsical and humorous side of Autolycus' antics.
As we gaze upon this delightful scene, we are reminded of the enduring power of art to transport us to another time and place - one where wit, charm, and cunning can still captivate our imaginations.
