EDITORS COMMENTS
This 16th-17th century artwork, titled "Artichoke (Cynara scolymus), Broad Beans (Vicia faba), and Lantern Plant (Physalis)" was created by the renowned Flemish botanist and artist Anselmus de Boodt (1550-1632) and his assistant Elias Verhulst. Commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612) of the Holy Roman Empire, this masterpiece is a testament to the rich natural history and cultural heritage of the Low Countries during this period. The intricately detailed drawing showcases three distinct plants: the artichoke, broad beans, and lantern plant. Anselmus de Boodt meticulously captured the textures and forms of each plant, using a combination of chalk, ink, and brush. The artichoke, with its thorny exterior and delicate inner flowers, is depicted in the foreground, while the broad beans and lantern plant are arranged in the background. The lantern plant, also known as the Chinese lantern or Physalis alkekengi, is a unique addition to the composition, with its translucent, lantern-like fruit and vibrant red and yellow coloration. The broad beans, with their distinctive pods and seeds, are also rendered with great precision. The artwork is not only a botanical illustration but also a cultural and historical artifact, reflecting the interest in natural history and the patronage of the arts during the Holy Roman Empire. Today, it is a prized possession of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, a testament to the enduring legacy of Anselmus de Boodt and Elias Verhulst's work.
