EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Antonio Maceo, a Cuban general and national hero who played a pivotal role in the Cuban War of Independence from Spain (1868-1878 and 1895-1898). Born as Antonio de la Caridad Maceo y Grajales on November 16, 1845, in the town of Santiago de Cuba, Maceo is best known for his military prowess and leadership during the guerrilla warfare phase of the conflict. In this portrait, taken around 1907, Maceo is depicted as a thoughtful and introspective man, with a serious expression and piercing gaze. His distinctive moustache and facial hair add to his imposing presence. Dressed in military uniform, he wears the insignia of his rank as Lieutenant General. The photograph is part of the Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Education Division of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, located in the New York Public Library. The exact creator of the photograph remains unknown, but it was likely produced by Atwell Printing and Binding Company or another similar firm. Maceo's legacy as a military leader and symbol of Cuban independence is celebrated in Cuba and the wider Latin American community. His image is often featured in historical illustrations and portraits, making this photograph an important addition to any collection of Cuban or Latin American heritage art.
