"Marmo: A Journey through Marble Masterpieces" In the realm of art, marble has been a canvas for countless tales and legends. Its smooth surface holds stories that transcend time, transporting us to ancient civilizations and sacred spaces. Just like a dromedary traversing vast deserts, marble carries us on its back through history. Imagine standing beneath the shade of a majestic palm tree, its fronds swaying gently in the breeze. In front of you, young boys playfully chase each other around an exquisite Carrara marble sculpture depicting "The Entry of Alexander the Great into Babylon. " The details are so lifelike that you can almost hear their laughter echoing through time. As we wander further within Genoa's St Lawrence Cathedral, we stumble upon hidden gems crafted from this precious stone. In the St John the Baptist Chapel lies "The Ark of Relics, " adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes such as "The Beheading of St John the Baptist. " Each panel tells a story etched in white marble by Giangiacomo and Guglielmo Della Porta. Moving deeper into this sacred space, our eyes are drawn to another masterpiece – Archbishop Giuliano Cybo's Funerary Monument. Panels displaying biblical scenes capture our attention; one particularly striking panel portrays "The Beheading of the Baptist" with astonishing realism. Leaving behind these religious narratives, we find ourselves at the Mausoleum of St Pius V. Here stands a high-relief in white marble portraying both resurrection and devotion as Pius V prays fervently. Nearby stands an awe-inspiring statue representing faith itself – testament to human creativity sculpted from solid rock. Our journey takes us even further back in time as we encounter Apollino - Young Apollo - carved delicately from pristine marble circa 1797. His youthful grace captivates all who behold him; his beauty frozen forever in stone.
