The Duke of Cumberland, also known as Prince Rupert, was a prominent figure during his time. Born in 1619, he held various titles including Duke of Bavaria and Earl of Holderness. Although he is often remembered for the infamous Massacre of the Highlanders, there is much more to his story. One notable aspect of Prince Rupert's life was his residence at Prince Rupert's House on Beech Lane in Barbican. This grand house served as a symbol of his wealth and influence. It stood as a testament to his status within society. Prince Rupert's actions were not without controversy, however. The Massacre of the Highlanders remains a dark chapter in history that cannot be ignored. This event saw him implicated in the brutal killing of many innocent people. Despite these controversies, Prince Rupert had connections with other influential figures such as George, Prince of Denmark. Their relationship can be seen through engravings depicting their interactions and shared interests. Another engraving showcases the Duke of Cumberland's own house, giving us a glimpse into his personal life and taste for opulence. It serves as a reminder that behind every public figure lies an individual with their own desires and aspirations. Prince William, The Duke of Cumberland, is another important character associated with this name. His engraving captures both power and authority; traits that defined him throughout his life. In addition to these historical figures bearing the title "Duke of Cumberland, " there are others who have left their mark on history like Ernest Augustus and Prince George-Frederick-Alexander-Charles-Ernest-Augustus. Lastly, we must not forget Andrew Laing's poignant color litho titled "An Old Song. " Through artistry and emotion captured in this piece, we gain insight into how events surrounding the Dukes impacted individuals' lives on both sides.
