Cyrus McCormick (1809-1884), an American inventor and entrepreneur, revolutionized agriculture with his groundbreaking reaping machine. First exhibited at the Crystal Palace exhibition of 1851, McCormick's invention of 1831, which was patented in 1834, transformed farming by making harvesting faster and more efficient. The machine, depicted in various illustrations including "Men of Progress" (1862) and the printers sample for the World's Inventors souvenir album, was a significant advancement from earlier models. McCormick's reaper and binder of 1877 further refined the technology. However, it's important to note that Scottish clergyman and inventor Patrick Bell (1799-1869) independently developed a similar reaping machine around the same time. Regardless, McCormick's company, McCormick Reaper Works, went on to dominate the agricultural implement industry in the late 19th century. The agricultural implements of this era, as showcased in images such as "Cyrus McCormick's reaping machine of 1862" and "Agricultural implements, 19th century," are a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of these pioneering inventors.
