The black tegu, also known as the Argentine black and white tegu, is a striking reptile with its glossy black scales and distinctive white markings. These large lizards are native to South America and are highly intelligent creatures, capable of learning tricks and forming strong bonds with their owners, and are opportunistic feeders, consuming a varied diet that includes insects, fruits, vegetables, small mammals, and even eggs. They have powerful jaws lined with sharp teeth that they use to crush their prey before swallowing it whole. These impressive reptiles can grow up to four feet in length and weigh over 15 pounds. Despite their size they can agile climbers and skilled burrowers and are excellent swimmers and can often be found basking in the sun near bodies of water. In captivity, black tegus require a spacious enclosure with plenty of hiding spots and opportunities for exercise. They thrive on a diet rich in protein and calcium supplements to support their growth and overall health.
