EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Drummond family at Bournehill Cottage in 1858. The painting, done in watercolor on paper by Henry Holland, showcases a serene and peaceful scene of leisure. The original building on this site was a fishing cottage designed by Holland's father-in-law, Lancelot Brown, with beautiful pleasure grounds overlooking the Solent. The Drummond family acquired the manor of Cadland in 1772 and later called upon Lancelot Brown and Henry Holland to design a new house and park. Boarn Hill Cottage became their summer retreat while Cadland House served as their main residence. In this picture-perfect moment, we see members of the Drummond family enjoying an informal lunch amidst lush gardens bathed in warm sunshine. A rider on horseback adds an element of elegance to the scene, highlighting the relaxed atmosphere that permeates throughout. The Victorian era comes alive through this snapshot of tranquil countryside living. Horses graze peacefully nearby, adding to the idyllic charm of rural life. This painting not only captures a specific moment but also immortalizes an entire way of life during that time period. As you gaze upon this remarkable piece from Bridgeman Images' collection, let yourself be transported back to a simpler time when nature's beauty intertwined seamlessly with human existence.
