Kanishka inaugurates Mahayana (Northern) Buddhism, AD 100 (litho)
8661013 Kanishka inaugurates Mahayana (Northern) Buddhism, AD 100 (litho) by Dudley, Robert Ambrose (1867-1951); Private Collection; (add.info.: Kanishka inaugurates Mahayana (Northern) Buddhism, AD 100. The Kushans were one of the chief Central Asian tribes that overran the country just beyond the frontiers of India in the century before Christ, and afterwards became a ruling race in Northern India itself. The greatest of the Kushans was the conqueror Kanishka (Kanerkes of the "Greek" coins), who did such great things for Buddhism by founding the Mahayana or popular gorgeously ritualistic form of it that his fame for ages has been spread from end to end of Asia. But he destroyed the philosophic Buddhism and substituted for it a superstitious polytheistic idolatry. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the momentous occasion of Kanishka inaugurating Mahayana (Northern) Buddhism in AD 100. Kanishka, the great Kushan conqueror, played a pivotal role in shaping the course of Buddhism by introducing this popular and gorgeously ritualistic form of the religion. His influence extended far beyond India, spreading his fame throughout Asia.
The illustration depicts Kanishka surrounded by followers as he establishes this new branch of Buddhism, which emphasized devotion and elaborate rituals. While Kanishka's contributions to Buddhism were significant, it is noted that he also veered away from the philosophical aspects of the religion towards a more superstitious and polytheistic form.
Through intricate details and expert craftsmanship, artist Robert Ambrose Dudley brings to life this historic moment in time. The image has been digitally enhanced to ensure its clarity and detail are preserved for generations to come.
As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back to ancient India where Kanishka's legacy continues to shape the beliefs and practices of millions around the world. It serves as a reminder of the enduring impact one individual can have on shaping religious traditions and cultural heritage.
