Non-regulation folding cap, c.1836 (wool, leather, linen, silk, canvas, gutta percha)

7339908 Non-regulation folding cap, c.1836 (wool, leather, linen, silk, canvas, gutta percha) by Unknown Artist, (19th century); 16x18.5x25 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Unknown Artist, (19th century)
An example of non-regulation clothing worn in undress. This accordion fold cap, the ribs of which are wire covered with a black lacquered canvas, is of blue wool with a black leather brim. The cap would collapse and was secured by means of a resin or gutta percha button fastened in the centre of an extending cap band. There are two resin or gutta percha buttons on either side of the brim to secure the cap band and cap in a flat position. When the cap is unfolded, the cap band slides back to conceal these buttons. Under both buttons are long silk ribbons which would have secured the cap under the chin.

Interior: The underside of the brim is of natural brown leather, while the top has been lacquered black. There is an interior cap band of thin brown leather and a lining of glazed white linen.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing print showcases a Non-regulation folding cap from around 1836, a unique piece of clothing worn in undress during the 19th century. Made of wool, leather, linen, silk, canvas, and gutta percha, this accordion fold cap features wire ribs covered with black lacquered canvas and a blue wool body with a black leather brim. The cap is designed to collapse for easy storage and transport, secured by resin or gutta percha buttons on the extending cap band. Additional buttons on either side of the brim help keep the cap flat when not in use. Silk ribbons attached to these buttons would have been used to secure the cap under the chin. Inside the cap, natural brown leather lines the underside of the brim while black lacquer covers the top. A thin brown leather interior band and glazed white linen lining complete this intricate piece. This non-traditional headwear exemplifies historical fashion innovation and attention to detail. It offers a glimpse into past styles and materials used in everyday attire for sailors or maritime workers during this period.
