Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
The vibrant colors of spring burst forth in this print titled "British Bulbs Give the Earliest Blooms". From the series British Bulbs for Home Gardens, this color lithograph by Fawkes (fl. 1920s) showcases the beauty and diversity of bulbs found in British gardens. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd for HMSO, this artwork is part of a collection held at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. The gallery's extensive collection features artist-designed posters commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. This particular print captures the essence of early blooms, highlighting how British bulbs bring life to gardens during their earliest stages. The delicate petals and intricate details are masterfully depicted through Fawkes' artistic vision. While these posters were originally intended to promote sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies, they now serve as historical artifacts that raise questions about the legacies of empire today. With over 200 posters acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s, these powerful images offer glimpses into a past era while also challenging contemporary audiences to reflect on uncomfortable beliefs associated with imperialism. As you admire this stunning print from Fine Art Finder, let it transport you to a time when nature's beauty was celebrated through artistry while also prompting contemplation about our complex relationship with history.
