The launch of an English ship, probably the James Galley, c.1676 (graphite & wash, grey)
7342596 The launch of an English ship, probably the James Galley, c.1676 (graphite & wash, grey) by Velde, Willem van de, the Younger (1633-1707); 23.6x45.1 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Younger
A port broadside view of a small ship after her launching being towed by two boats. A small mast is in place of a foremast and has a topsail hoisted on it. Another sail is being hoisted on a mast where the mainmast is stepped. There are several wherries in the right foreground and some ships at anchor in the background, with a yacht before the wind on the left. The land is in the distance.
The Charles Galley and the James Galley, both launched in 1676, were distinctive in being two-deckers with only one or two ports forward and aft on the lower deck (see PAI7276 and PAH1855). The artist has shown no ports on the lower deck, but the general appearance agrees more with that of the James Galley as shown in Robinson number PAH1855; she had only one port aft on each side.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning graphite and wash print captures the historic launch of an English ship, believed to be the 'James Galley', circa 1676. The artist, Willem van de Velde the Younger, expertly depicts the momentous occasion with intricate detail and precision.
In this port broadside view, we see the newly launched ship being towed by two boats as it sets sail for its maiden voyage. The small mast with a topsail hoisted on it adds to the authenticity of the scene. Wherries in the foreground and ships at anchor in the background provide a sense of bustling activity in this maritime setting.
The 'Charles Galley' and 'James Galley', both launched in 1676, were unique vessels with distinctive features such as limited ports on their lower decks. The attention to detail in this artwork aligns more closely with historical records of the 'James Galley', showcasing only one port aft on each side.
This unsigned drawing by Van de Velde is a testament to his skill as an artist and his ability to capture significant moments in naval history. The grey tones add depth and dimension to this scene, making it a valuable addition to any collection celebrating maritime heritage.
