Death of Mithradates (litho)
8660850 Death of Mithradates (litho) by Morrow, Edwin A. (1877-1952) ; Private Collection; (add.info.: Death of Mithradates. After the third of his wars with Rome, and when Tigranes, his son-in-law, refused to allow him sanctuary in Armenia, Mithradates marched with the remnant of his forces to Panticapaeum, the capital of the Cimmerian Bosphorus. There his army, headed by his son, revolted, and pursued him into a strong tower. In despair Mithradates took poison, but it had no effect; and one of his Gaulish mercenaries, at his command, thereupon slew him with his sword. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the dramatic scene of the Death of Mithradates, a powerful ruler who met his tragic end in despair and betrayal. After facing defeat in his wars with Rome, Mithradates sought refuge in Armenia only to be denied sanctuary by his own son-in-law. With nowhere left to turn, he retreated to Panticapaeum where his own army turned against him.
In a moment of desperation, Mithradates attempted to take his own life with poison but was unsuccessful. It was then that one of his mercenaries carried out the final act at his command, ending the once mighty ruler's life with a sword.
The artist Edwin A. Morrow masterfully depicts this somber moment in history, capturing the emotions of hopelessness and resignation that must have consumed Mithradates as he faced his inevitable fate. The black and white tones add to the intensity of the scene, emphasizing the gravity of death and mortality.
This print serves as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of power and glory, showcasing how even the mightiest rulers can meet their downfall in moments of weakness and betrayal.
