Sea Adventure: The King's gift (colour litho)

8668730 Sea Adventure: The King's gift (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The King's gift. In 1513 Lord Edward Howard, with a small squadron of two galleys, two barges and two boats, attacked six big French galleys near Brest. Howard himself, followed by a number of his men, boarded one of the enemy galleys, but his own galley swung clear, and after a gallant fight he was driven overboard and drowned. Howard was wearing round his neck a rich gold chain and whistle presented by the King; he took these off and cast them into the sea lest the King's gift should fall into enemy hands.
