Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print titled "A New Zealand Dairy Farm" takes us on a visual journey to the picturesque landscapes of New Zealand. From the series Buy New Zealand Produce, this colour lithograph by Frank Newbould showcases the beauty and abundance of a dairy farm in stunning detail. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board, this artwork was part of a larger campaign aimed at promoting Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain and its colonies. The poster collection held by Manchester Art Gallery offers a fascinating glimpse into this historical period. The image itself transports us to the heart of rural New Zealand, where lush green pastures stretch as far as the eye can see. Cows graze peacefully under clear blue skies while rolling hills provide an idyllic backdrop. It is a scene that evokes feelings of tranquility and harmony with nature. However, it is important to acknowledge that these posters also raise difficult questions about the legacies of empire today. While they celebrate the products and people associated with British imperialism, they also remind us of uncomfortable beliefs that were prevalent during that time. Nevertheless, this particular print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a historical artifact. Its vivid colors and meticulous attention to detail make it an exquisite addition to any art collection or space seeking to capture the essence of natural beauty intertwined with complex historical narratives.
