Do You Know: Why were tankards originally glass-bottomed? (colour litho)

8668134 Do You Know: Why were tankards originally glass-bottomed? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Why were tankards originally glass-bottomed? Pewter mugs with glass bottoms are a survival of long ago days, when it was the custom to pledge friendship by drinking to the health of one another. Such healths were not always exchanged without mutual suspicion, and a glass bottom provided the drinker with the opportunity of watching for a stealthy blow. The same suspicion was apparent as the loving cup was passed round, and one guest held the cover with his dagger hand, whilst his neighbour drank to him. The superstition of passing on the stairs comes about in the same way; the fear of a stealthy blow. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph print titled "Do You Know: Why were tankards originally glass-bottomed?" by the English School from the 20th century delves into a fascinating historical custom. The image depicts pewter mugs with glass bottoms, a relic from days gone by when friends would toast to each other's health. However, these toasts were not always exchanged without suspicion, leading to the ingenious addition of glass bottoms in tankards. The print explains that the glass bottom allowed drinkers to watch for any potential treachery or deceitful intentions during these exchanges of friendship. Similarly, the tradition of passing on stairs is rooted in this same fear of a stealthy blow. This insight into past superstitions and customs sheds light on how human nature has always been cautious and wary even amongst friends. With intricate details and vibrant colours, this artwork not only educates viewers about historical practices but also invites them to ponder on the complexities of human relationships and trust. It serves as a reminder that traditions hold deep meanings and can reveal much about our shared history and collective psyche.
