Death of Koprulu Fazil Mustafa Pasha at The Battle of Slankamenin 1691
EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print, after the painting by John Harris Valda (1874-1942), captures a pivotal moment in history - the demise of Koprulu Fazil Mustafa Pasha, Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire from 1689 to 1691. Depicted on this battlefield scene is the Turkish leader, clad in regal attire and grasping his sword, as he falls to his knees amidst the chaos and carnage of war. The Austrian forces are seen advancing in the background, their armor glinting in the sunlight.
The Battle of Slankamenin was fought on August 19th, 1691, near Belgrade, Serbia. It marked a decisive victory for Austria against the Ottoman Empire during the Great Turkish War. Koprulu Fazil Mustafa Pasha's death was a significant blow to Ottoman morale and contributed to their eventual defeat.
This illustration is taken from Hutchinson's History of Nations, published in 1915. Valda's depiction masterfully conveys both drama and intensity as it freezes time on that fateful day when empires clashed swords.
