Owned and bred by HH The Aga Khan, he comes from the Blenheim-Mah Mahal stock and is the third grey horse to win this classic race. Trained by Frank Butters and ridden by C Smirke, he easily defeated the favourites and won in record time. Mahmoud's success in the Derby was most gratifying to HH The Aga Khan, because all racing folk declared a grey could never "stay." The Aga Khan always had belief in the breeding of the colt and this was justified by the record Mahmoud placed to his credit.
