EDITORS COMMENTS
**Unveiling a Treasured Fragment: MS 293b** This exquisite print presents a fragmentary yet captivating glimpse into the illuminated manuscript cutting, MS 293b. Dating back to circa 1482-1492, this parchment treasure hails from Avila and once formed part of a Choir Psalter created for the royal monastery of St Thomas in Avila. The collage features an historiated initial 'D', adorned with stylized acanthus and pearls on a gold ground, surrounded by foliage, grotesques, and putti. This ornate design is enclosed within composite floral and acanthus borders that showcase birds, animals, and the devices of Ferdinand and Isabella – symbols of power and unity. The reverse side bears fragments from Luke 1:48-51 (the Magnificat) as well as Psalm 114, which would have introduced Monday Vespers. The partial inscription alongside the frame reads "NIO N VIDEMUS SPE" ("We do not see hope"), a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of human existence. This fragmentary yet richly decorated piece offers a unique window into the artistic and cultural heritage of 15th-century Spain, where faith, power, and beauty converged in exquisite illuminated manuscripts. As we gaze upon this treasured relic, we are reminded that even fragments can hold profound significance and inspire our imagination.
