EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Fontaine Wallace, an iconic public drinking fountain in Paris. The lithograph, created by Auguste Victor Deroy, captures the essence of this philanthropic gift bestowed upon the city by Sir Richard Wallace. Known for his generosity and support during times of turmoil, Sir Richard provided these fountains to Paris as a symbol of humanitarianism. The design of the fountain was initially conceptualized by Sir Richard himself but brought to life by sculptor Charles-Auguste Lebourg. Inspired by the Fontaine des Innocents, these iron fountains became a prominent feature in the urban landscape of Paris starting from 1872. In this particular illustration, we see an Applied Model variant of the fountain. This cost-effective version features a caryatid depicting the head of a naiad gently releasing water into a cup below. While many Fontaines Wallace have disappeared over time, only one remains today on rue Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. Beyond its functional purpose as a source of potable water for daily use and hygiene purposes, this fontaine represents more than just utility; it embodies acts of kindness and compassion towards fellow citizens. It stands tall amidst bustling street scenes and Morris columns, reminding us all that even small gestures can make significant impacts on people's lives. Bridgeman Images has beautifully captured this engraving from Fine Art Finder, allowing us to appreciate both the artistry behind this piece and its historical significance within French culture.
