Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the essence of an era when consumerism and empire-building were intertwined. Created by Frank Newbould in the early 20th century, this colourful lithograph was commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery, UK, this artwork is part of a remarkable collection of artist-designed posters that aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire. With over 200 posters acquired in the 1930s, these images provide insight into both the people and products associated with Britain's colonial past. However, viewing these posters today raises thought-provoking questions about our understanding of history and its legacies. While they showcase strong visuals depicting various aspects of empire life, they also reflect uncomfortable beliefs prevalent during that time. "The Good Shopper" invites us to contemplate how consumer culture played a role in shaping perceptions about imperialism. It serves as a reminder that behind every product lies a complex web of historical narratives and power dynamics. As we engage with this image from Fine Art Finder through Bridgeman Images, let us explore not only its aesthetic appeal but also critically examine our own relationship with consumption and its connection to larger socio-political structures throughout history.
