EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the historic moment of Job Charnock founding Calcutta in 1690. The image depicts Charnock, a noted factor, who selected the site of Calcutta (Satanati) and established a wattle and daub factory on the banks of the Hugli River. However, due to conflicts between British and native authorities, he was forced to flee to Madras.
After the troubles subsided, Charnock returned to Bengal in 1690 with an armed party. Upon his arrival at Satanati, he found only the remains of a burnt hut. Undeterred, he persevered through challenging conditions such as mud banks during rainy seasons. From these humble beginnings emerged the magnificent capital city of Calcutta.
This illustration from Hutchinson's History of Nations offers a glimpse into this pivotal moment in history when Calcutta began its transformation into a bustling metropolis. The imagery adds depth and nostalgia to this scene from early twentieth-century India.
As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of Job Charnock's pioneering spirit and determination that laid the foundation for one of India's most vibrant cities. It serves as a testament to human resilience and ingenuity in building civilizations against all odds.
