EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph by Lynne Cameron, Rangers manager Walter Smith gazes intently at the pitch during the UEFA Cup Round of 16 second leg match against Werder Bremen, held at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, on February 25, 1993. The image captures a pivotal moment in the European campaign of one of Scotland's most successful football clubs. With Rangers holding a slim 1-0 advantage from the first leg, the pressure was on to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the competition. The home team, wearing their iconic blue and white striped shirts, were determined to defend their lead and progress to the next stage. Smith, a former Rangers player and later captain, had taken over as manager in 1991. He had already led the team to the Scottish Premier League title in his first full season in charge, and now he was aiming to guide them to European success. However, the German opponents, led by the experienced Dutch coach Otto Rehhagel, were not going to make it easy for them. Werder Bremen, known for their attacking football and impressive European pedigree, were a formidable opponent. As the second half of the match began, the tension in the stadium was palpable. Smith, with his arms folded and a focused expression, was deep in thought, no doubt considering his tactics and team selection. The outcome of the game would depend on the team's ability to keep a clean sheet and create scoring opportunities. This photograph is a testament to the intensity and drama of European football, and the crucial role that managers play in shaping their team's fortunes on the pitch. Despite the 1-0 deficit, Smith and Rangers were not yet ready to surrender, and the battle for a place in the quarter-finals was far from over.
