Crowned Eagle Collection

The Crowned Eagle (Accipitridae Accipitriformes) is a large bird of prey found in sub-Saharan Africa and has a black and white head, with a golden crown on its forehead, and dark brown wings and tail. Its body is mostly brown with white patches on the underside. The Crowned Eagle feeds mainly on small mammals such as rodents, hares, mongooses, hyraxes and monkeys; it also takes birds such as guineafowls and francolins. It hunts from perches or by soaring over open areas to spot prey below. The species is monogamous and pairs may stay together for life; they build large stick nests in trees or cliffs where they lay one to two eggs each year, and are territorial birds that will defend their nest sites against intruders of any kind including humans. As their habitat continues to be lost due to human activities such as deforestation, the population of this species has declined significantly over recent decades making it vulnerable to extinction in some parts of its range.
