Venus centered on the North Pole

June 3, 1996 - The hemispheric view of Venus, as revealed by more than a decade of radar investigations culminating in the 1990-1994 Magellan mission, is centered on the North Pole. The Magellan spacecraft imaged more than 98% of Venus at a resolution of about 100 meters; the effective resolution of this image is about 3 km. A mosaic of the Magellan images (most with illumination from the west) forms the image base. Gaps in the Magellan coverage were filled with images from the Earth-based Arecibo radar in a region centered roughly on 0 degree latitude and longitude, and with a neutral tone elsewhere (primarily near the south pole). The composite image was processed to improve contrast and to emphasize small features, and was color-coded to represent elevation. Gaps in the elevation data from the Magellan radar altimeter were filled with altimetry from the Venera spacecraft and the U.S. Pioneer Venus missions. An orthographic projection was used, simulating a distant view of one hemisphere of the planet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing hemispheric view of Venus, with the North Pole at its center. The image is a result of extensive radar investigations spanning over a decade, culminating in the Magellan mission from 1990 to 1994. With an impressive resolution of about 100 meters for more than 98% of Venus, this particular image boasts an effective resolution of approximately 3 km. To create this stunning mosaic, the Magellan spacecraft captured images primarily illuminated from the west. However, any gaps in coverage were filled using images obtained by the Earth-based Arecibo radar system centered around latitude and longitude coordinates near zero degrees. In areas where data was lacking (especially near the south pole), neutral tones were applied. In order to enhance contrast and emphasize intricate details, advanced processing techniques were employed on this composite image. Additionally, elevation data was color-coded to provide a visual representation of different heights across Venus' surface. To complete this comprehensive view, missing elevation information from Magellan's radar altimeter was supplemented with data collected by both Venera spacecraft and U. S. Pioneer Venus missions. Presented in an orthographic projection style that simulates viewing one hemisphere from afar, this remarkable print offers viewers a unique perspective on our neighboring planet's mysterious terrain and geological features.
