Lunar mosaic of the south polar region of the moon

June 3, 1996 - Lunar mosaic of ~1500 Clementine images of the south polar region of the moon. An orthographic projection centered on the south pole. The Schrodinger Basin (320 km in diameter) is located in the lower right of the mosaic. Amundsen-Ganswindt is the more subdued circular basin between Schrodinger and the pole. The polar regions of the moon are of special interest because of the postulated occurrence of ice in permanently shadowed areas. The south pole is of greater interest because the area that remains in shadow is much larger than that at the north pole

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning lunar mosaic of the south polar region of the moon, taken on June 3,1996. Comprised of approximately 1500 Clementine images, this orthographic projection offers a mesmerizing view from space, highlighting the unique characteristics and topography of this enigmatic celestial body. The focal point of this image is the Schrodinger Basin, an impressive crater with a diameter measuring 320 kilometers. Situated in the lower right corner of the mosaic, it commands attention with its distinct circular shape. Just adjacent to it lies another intriguing feature called Amundsen-Ganswindt - a more subdued circular basin nestled between Schrodinger and the pole. What makes these polar regions particularly fascinating is their potential for harboring ice in permanently shadowed areas. The vast expanse that remains in shadow at the south pole surpasses that found at its northern counterpart, adding to its allure for scientific exploration. As we gaze upon this square-shaped photograph capturing an otherworldly landscape devoid of human presence, we are reminded once again of our boundless fascination with space and our relentless quest to unravel its mysteries. This image serves as a reminder that even from afar, Earth's natural satellites continue to captivate us with their rugged terrain, textured surfaces, and awe-inspiring beauty.
