Oil well, 19th century
Oil well. Crude oil erupting from a wellhead in a 19th-century oil field. The wellhead is the structure used to contain and pump oil as it reaches the surface from deep underground, often, as here, under great pressure. This oil well is in the Balakhani oilfield in Baku, Azerbaijan, then under Russian rule. Oil had been produced in this region since at least the 16th century. The first modern oil wells here were drilled in the 1840s. The oil industry here expanded over the following decades, with large amounts of oil still being obtained here today. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - an oil well in the 19th century. The image showcases the sheer power and force of crude oil erupting from a wellhead in the Balakhani oilfield, located in Baku, Azerbaijan during Russian rule. Under immense pressure, this natural resource gushes to the surface, symbolizing both human ingenuity and the geological wonders hidden deep underground. Dating back to at least the 16th century, this region has been producing oil for centuries. However, it was not until the 1840s that modern drilling techniques were employed here. Over time, this industry expanded exponentially and continues to yield substantial amounts of oil even today. The monochrome artwork featured here is extracted from La Science Illustree's first volume published in 1888 - a renowned French popular science weekly magazine. It beautifully portrays an industrious worker amidst spraying crude oil; his presence emphasizes humanity's role in harnessing nature's energy resources. This image serves as a testament to technological advancements and their impact on society during that era. Moreover, it highlights how fossil fuels have played a pivotal role in shaping our world by providing energy for various industries. As we admire this historical snapshot frozen in time, let us reflect upon mankind's relentless pursuit of progress and innovation while acknowledging the environmental challenges associated with our dependence on such finite resources.
