Four Land Army Girls are mad with Mr. John Morgan. The Socialist MP for Doncaster, Yorks
Four Land Army Girls are mad with Mr. John Morgan. The Socialist MP for Doncaster, Yorks, put his foot in it when he told Parliament how these four girls had reclaimed 300 acres of wasteland at Peacehaven. " One was a tap dancer and did not even take the trouble to remove the colour from her nails when she she drove the tractor" he said in his chorus of praise. And Thala dragged an oily stained glove from her hand. " Is there any colour on those nails" she asked. " Its ridiculous" said Thala Bowman. Thala Bowman is a the tap dancer aged twenty-five, Phyllis Jones is eight years older. Twenty three year old Stella Gatton was a secretary and thirty-one year old Margot Holman a glove saleswoman in an Oxford Street store. February 1940

Four Land Army Girls Show Their Displeasure - A Captivating Snapshot from 1940
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this intriguing print captured by the Illustrations Bureau, we are transported back to the heart of World War II. The image features four remarkable Land Army girls who find themselves at odds with Mr. John Morgan, the Socialist MP for Doncaster, Yorks. The story behind their discontent unfolds as Mr. Morgan addresses Parliament about these resilient young women and their impressive feat of reclaiming 300 acres of wasteland at Peacehaven. However, his words take an unfortunate turn when he mentions that one of them, a tap dancer, didn't bother removing the color from her nails while driving a tractor. Thala Bowman, aged twenty-five and one of the offended land girls in question, swiftly challenges Mr. Morgan's statement by dragging an oily stained glove from her hand and questioning if there is any trace of nail polish on her nails. Her frustration is echoed by her companions - Phyllis Jones (33), Stella Gatton (23), and Margot Holman (31) - each representing different backgrounds but united in their dedication to serving their country during wartime. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also sheds light on the resilience and determination exhibited by these extraordinary women on the home front during World War II. It serves as a powerful reminder that even amidst conflict and adversity, individuals can rise above societal expectations and make significant contributions to society through sheer grit and unwavering
