EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1969, we witness a heartwarming display of skill and determination. Titled "When it comes to knitting the girls have it. . . purl and plain and simple" the image captures a friendly competition between 15 schoolboys and 16 girls in the same class. The challenge was to knit blankets for charity, with both teams vying for victory. Astonishingly, the girls swiftly completed their blanket in record time, showcasing their remarkable talent and efficiency. The finished masterpiece was graciously handed over to Dr Arnold Cowan, an esteemed champion of Glasgow's elderly community. Meanwhile, back at Halfmerke Primary School in East Kilbride, the boys were diligently clicking away on their needles. Although their progress seemed slower compared to the girls', they remained focused on achieving their goal – completing a beautiful blanket for those in need. This nostalgic snapshot perfectly encapsulates an era when knitting was not only a practical skill but also an activity that fostered concentration and camaraderie among young students. It serves as a reminder of simpler times when children embraced traditional crafts with enthusiasm. Preserved by Memory Lane Prints, this photograph transports us back to a moment where gender stereotypes were challenged as these youngsters showcased their dedication and passion for knitting – proving that talent knows no boundaries or expectations.
