EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the Prairie of Buyukdere in the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, where forty majestic Plane trees, known as the Plane trees of Godfrey of Bouillon, stand tall and proud. According to an enduring legend, it is believed that the field tent of Godfrey of Bouillon, the first Crusader leader, was once pitched next to one of these trees during the Crusades in the 11th century. The Crusaders, led by Godfrey, had camped in this area during their march towards the conquest of Constantinople. The Plane trees, with their large, broad leaves and massive trunks, provide ample shade and offer a tranquil respite from the arid landscape of the Bosphorus. The engraving, created by Lemaitre, David and S. Cholet, captures the essence of the scene with remarkable detail, showcasing the daily life of the Crusaders and their horses in the midst of this millenary prairie. The Ottoman Empire, which ruled Turkey during this time, is depicted in the background, with Turkish soldiers and tents scattered across the landscape. The Yedi Kardash trees, another notable feature of the scene, can be seen in the distance. These trees, known for their unique shape and beauty, add to the overall charm of the engraving. The Plane trees of Godfrey of Bouillon continue to be a source of fascination and intrigue, not only for their historical significance but also for their botanical beauty. This engraving, taken from the 19th-century book "Historia de Turquia" by Jouannin and Van Gaver, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to an era of legendary Crusades, Ottoman society, and the breathtaking landscapes of Turkey.
