EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures HMS Warrior R31, a Colossus-class light aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, anchored in a tranquil harbor in March 1946. At the time, Warrior was on loan to the Royal Canadian Navy, serving as HMCS Warrior from 1946 to 1948. After its return to the British Navy, the ship underwent two modernization phases, the first in 1956, which included the installation of an angled flight deck. During its tenure with the Royal Navy, Warrior played a significant role in various experimental initiatives. In 1948-1949, the ship was used for aircraft landing experiments and was fitted with a rubber flight deck. Later, in 1957, it served as the headquarters ship during nuclear testing at Christmas Island. However, Warrior's naval journey did not end with the British Navy. In 1958, the vessel was sold to the Argentine Navy and entered Argentine service in 1959 as ARA Independencia. This photograph is part of The Peter Butt Aviation Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, offering a rare glimpse into the history of this versatile and influential warship.
