EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Caracalla, also known as Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus Augustus, who ruled the Roman Empire from 188 to 217 AD. Caracalla was the son of the emperor Septimius Severus and Julia Domna and was adopted by his grandfather, the emperor Caracalla the Elder, who was a cousin of Septimius Severus. Caracalla is best known for granting Roman citizenship to all free men in the Roman Empire, an act known as the Constitutio Antoniniana. The portrait, created as a copperplate engraving, is part of the comprehensive work "De Roomsche Monarchy" or "The Roman Monarchy" by Abraham Bogaert, published in Utrecht in 1697. Bogaert's work was a significant contribution to the study of Roman history and culture during the 17th century. Caracalla is depicted in the portrait wearing a laurel wreath and a toga, the traditional attire of a Roman emperor. His facial features are striking, with a strong jawline, piercing gaze, and a well-defined nose. The portrait exudes an air of authority and confidence, reflecting Caracalla's powerful reign. Caracalla's name is inscribed in the upper left corner of the portrait, along with the titles "Roman Emperor," "Severus," "Antoninus," "Augustus," and "Geta Lucius Septimius." The portrait provides a glimpse into the rich history of the Roman Empire and the legacy of one of its most influential rulers.
