EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1980 SBAC Farnborough Airshow, the McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle with the serial number 71-0291 (msn 0012/B002) takes center stage. Originally built as the second TF-15A in 1973, this iconic aircraft made its first flight on October 18 of that year. However, its history is far from ordinary. In 1979, the F-15B-4-MC was converted into the Hughes/McDonnell Douglas private venture F-15E Strike Eagle prototype, initially known as the F-15DRF (Duel Role Fighter) program. Five years later, in May 1991, the aircraft underwent significant modifications, being fitted with a centerline pod containing reconnaissance equipment and a data link. It was then inscribed as the "F-15RTD Peek Eagle" as part of this private McDonnell Douglas venture. The F-15E Strike Eagle 71-0291 was later sold to the Alsalam Aircraft Co in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on November 6, 2002. After being restored and meticulously painted into RSAF markings, it became a proud addition to the RSAF museum at Riyadh, bearing the number 1315. This photograph captures a moment in aviation history, showcasing the versatility and adaptability of the McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle. With its rich history and continuous evolution, this aircraft remains a remarkable symbol of aeronautical innovation.
